1. What was the relationship like between kings and the pope (why did they clash)?
They clashed because Pope Urban VI was the first non French Pope to be elected.
2. What event(s) caused the Schism to occur?
The immediate cause was the election of Pope Urban VI. One of the problems that eventually led to the Schism was the Avignon papacy.
3. How did it end?
In 1414 to 1418, the Council of Constance was successful in fixing the Schism. The deposition of the Avignon Pope induced the resignation of the Roman Pope. This action restored the balance between the popes and once again there was room for one Pope.
4. How this in turn contributed to the end of the Middle Ages?
It greatly weakened the Church's influence and prestige.
